Bessie M. Zubal of Stanley, a former longtime
resident of Huron, passed away peacefully with
her family by her side on October 7, 2010, at
Our Lady of Victory Hospital in Stanley.
Bessie was born September 5, 1917, on the
McElmurry family farm at Huron, Colburn
Township, Chippewa County, Wisconsin.  She
was the daughter of G. Leslie & Elsie (Tatro)
McElmurry.  The McElmurrys were one of the
early pioneer families to arrive at Huron in
1882.  The family was well known in the
community during Bessie’s formative years
where she attended the Huron Grade School.
In her early twenties she was employed by the
Schumacher family of Maple Hill.  There at a
dance she met the love of her life, William John
Zubal.  They were married on October 16,
1939 at Waukon, Iowa.  They lived in
Milwaukee and Cornell before returning to
Huron in the late 1940s where they raised their
two children.
She was a member of the former Stanley
Presbyterian Church and Ladies Aid.  She
liked to sing and knew many old hymns and
folk tunes from memory.   She loved card
games and played with a local card club for
many years.  In the latter years of her life she
became an avid Brewer and Badger fan.  She
enjoyed traveling and took many trips with her
husband to visit family and friends across the
country.  She also enjoyed gardening and will
be remembered for her love of flowers and her
Russian dill pickles, a family recipe. Bessie will
be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her son William 'Bill' (Evey)
Zubal and daughter Beulah Jean ‘Booty’ (Bart)
Castro, grandchildren Linda (Jim) Klapperich,
Brian (Carrie) Zubal, Laurie (Dan)
Fitzsimmons, and Jennifer Castro, great-
grandchildren Brittney & Hunter Klapperich,
Charlie & Zac Zubal, and Jacob & Luke
Fitzsimmons, sisters-in-law Lorraine Zubal,
Ruby & Florence McElmurry, and close cousin
Leone LaBonte. She was preceded in death by
her husband William in 2000, parents, eight
brothers: Harvey, Gordon, Archie, Leigh,
Robert, Harley, Allen, and Ralph, two sisters
Shirley and Florence, and a grandson Jamie
Zubal.
Services will be held on Monday, October 11,
